Year after year, the J On The Beach organising committee brings together top-notch speakers, innovators, and thinkers to share their insights with the community under the Malaga sun.
The speaker lineup is carefully curated, with around 35-40% of speakers being directly invited by the committee and the remaining 60-65% coming through our Call for Papers. This ensures a diverse and cutting-edge program, blending established thought leaders with fresh new voices.
So, what’s new this year? Let’s dive into the key topics and innovations that make this edition truly unmissable!
Day 1: Workshop Extravaganza
A Deep Dive into DevOps, AI, and Distributed Systems
This year’s workshops are all about hands-on learning. DevOps lovers will have plenty to sink their teeth into with three dedicated workshops covering infrastructure, automation, security, and reliability engineering. Whether you’re mastering GitHub Advanced Security or exploring GitLab for project management and DevOps, we’ve got you covered. AWS guru Guillermo Ruiz is also bringing an interactive DevOps workshop for those eager to expand their cloud expertise.
This year at J On The Beach, artificial intelligence is more present than ever, and we’ve prepared a series of hands-on workshops for you to dive into the latest tools. In the Building Autonomous AI Agents with Open-Source Frameworks workshop, Shivay Lamba will guide you in creating autonomous agents using open-source frameworks. If data analysis is more your thing, don’t miss AI-Powered Data Analysis with Ismael Pineda, where you’ll learn how to apply AI to uncover patterns and optimize processes. And if you’re in recruitment, the AI in Talent Acquisition workshop with Laura Cortés and Javier Moreno will show you how AI is transforming talent acquisition, from candidate selection to predicting successful hires. Three must-attend workshops to understand how AI is changing our professional lives!
And if distributed systems are your thing (and they should be), don’t miss our two workshops: one on building a peer-to-peer content delivery network and another on Interaction-Oriented Programming for decentralized, loosely coupled software systems.
On top of that, we’re excited to introduce two premium workshops: Simon Brown will be running Visualising Software Architecture with the C4 Model, while Blanca Gil Garcia will tackle the ever-important Getting Business Buy-In to Address Technical Debt. If you want to level up your skills with industry-leading experts, these are a must!
Talks You Can’t Miss
FastAPI
FastAPI is revolutionizing Python web development—it’s the fastest-growing library on GitHub in recent years! And who better to guide us through it than its creator, Sebastian Ramirez? He’ll show us how to build a cloud-based FastAPI app in just a few hours. If you work with Python, this one’s a no-brainer.
AI Talks – Bigger Than Ever!
AI is taking over J On The Beach! Last year, 20-30% of talks covered AI, but this year, that number has jumped to 40%. From development and MLOps to security, RAG, and databases, we’re bringing AI from every possible angle. AI is taking the spotlight this year, and we’re ready to harness its power.
Local-First Software
For the third year in a row, we’re doubling down on Local-First Software. You can check the blog post we wrote a year ago about it. With increasing concerns around privacy, security, and offline-first capabilities, this approach is gaining serious traction. Peter Van Hardenberg, one of the pioneers of this movement who already graced our stage in 2022, is back! Joining him is Rüdiger Klaehn who impressed us last year. Together, they’ll explore how Local-First is shaping the future of software with real-world applications.
Rust and Java – A Developer’s Perspective
J On The Beach’s ‘J’ could stand for Java, Joe Armstrong, or even Jamón, but Java has always had a strong presence here. This year, Lutske de Leeuw and David Vlijmincx will cover essential Java insights, while Rust continues its rise with Colin Breck diving into Rust security, Pratim Bhosale showcasing a tool to chat with your codebase, and Rüdiger Klaehn exploring content-addressing in Rust. If you love systems programming, this track is for you!
Engineering Management & Legacy Systems
This edition brings also a stellar lineup of engineering management experts, including Ixchel Ruiz (Communication & Conflict Resolution), Vanessa Formicola (Holistic Engineering), Raphaël Beamonte (Engineering Management), Blanca Garcia (Legacy Systems), and Sheila Najouks (Platform Software Sustainability). Get ready for insights on managing teams, tackling legacy code, and ensuring long-term software sustainability. Because let’s be honest, legacy code is everywhere, and we all have to deal with it.
Quality Assurance (QA)
Testing and QA are essential for high-quality software. Mesut Durukal and Maros Kutschy will dive into modern QA strategies, automation techniques, and atomic habits for building rock-solid applications. If your motto is “Test or Regret It,” then don’t miss this.
Hackathon Time!
We’re bringing back the Hackathon, and this year’s prizes are juicier than ever. Powered by the Cátedra Fintech of the University of Málaga in collaboration with GSR and TradingView, the Crypto Trading Hackathon will challenge participants to explore algorithmic trading, blockchain, and DeFi strategies. If you want to test your coding and trading skills in a real-world scenario, this is your chance!
💰 Over €3,000 in prizes are up for grabs! So, if you’ve got the skills and the guts, this is the place to prove it. The regitration is FREE & OPEN to everyone!
