Introduction to Data Science and Machine Learning

This workshop aims to give attendees a detailed introduction to data science and machine learning and to leave them in a state where they can learn on their own.

Ghida Ibrahim

Quantitative engineer/data scientist

Ghida works as a quantitative engineer/data scientist in the edge infrastructure team at Facebook London, where she builds data-driven tools and models, and perform in-depth analysis to drive the expansion and optimize the operation of one of the largest and most complex networks forming the internet. Many of the projects that she led aim at leveraging Facebook data insights to help build a more inclusive internet, through increasing internet penetration and the quality of experience witnessed by people worldwide online.

What the attendees will learn

1. Demystifying data science:

  • what is data?
  • what is data science?
  • why the data science hype?
  •  who is a data scientist?
  • what are the main data science applications/use cases?

2. Overview of the data science pipeline including data collection, data preparation/cleaning, data exploration & visualization, predictive analytics (machine learning), building data products
This section also includes a hands-on exercise around data collection, manipulation, and exploration using pandas.

3. Introduction to machine learning:

  • what is machine learning (ML)?
  • supervised vs unsupervised machine learning
  • Intro to Feature Engineering
  • Building a ML model: Overview of most popular ML techniques and underlying optimization algorithms
  • Assessing the performance of a ML model

This section also includes a hands-on exercise about ML using tensorflow

4. The way forward: A list of online resources, datasets, and influencers to help you build your career as a data scientist
